There is no better feeling than coming home after a long day at work or school. However, if your house is dark and dirty, that feeling may not be as positive. The whole point of having a house is to feel comfortable and “at home” in it. Luckily, there are ways to make your house feel more like a home with a little bit of effort.

Decorate your house

Use light-colored curtains to allow for natural light in. Curtains, especially in your bedroom, are important, but dark colors can keep natural light out and can make the overall feel of the room more depressing. Lighten up the colors of your curtains. Not only will the colors be more positive, but the room will be filled with natural light. In some rooms, if you have higher windows, you can even opt to not put curtains on those windows.

Light candles to make your house smell nice. The light from candles is nice, but choosing a scent that soothes you to your core is a powerful feeling. Choose a scent that reminds you of something positive, whether it is a favorite scent or a scent that reminds you of a memory or a person. This will help your house smell good while helping you to be calm.

Hang photos of people and places that make you happy. If you are having a bad day, there is nothing better than seeing the faces of loved ones or being reminded of places you have been to that you adored. There are apps and websites that allow you to make prints from Facebook and Instagram photos. You can also include positive quotes to help motivate and inspire you to conquer anything that comes your way.

Listen to music

Whether you have an elaborate stereo system or just listening to music channels on television, music has the power to lift any mood. Listening to calm or positive music can really help change the mood if you are having a bad day. Music therapy focuses on this, using music to help people accomplish goals, especially in a hospital setting. This same thinking can be applied to everyday life.

Make a playlist on your MP3 player or computer of songs that make you happy. When you are having a bad day, turn on the playlist to pump you up and to help you get work done. These songs should be songs that have meaning to you, whether you love the message or the song has a fun memory attached to it. Listening to these songs, especially if they are sentimental, can calm you down and make you at peace, even after a long day.

Ask your friends to make a list of a few songs that remind them of you. Play them on your music player when you need a nice pick me up. Make playlists about each of your friends and play them when you have your friends over for get-togethers. This is a fun way to make new memories with your friends while reminiscing on old memories.

Paint the walls light, happy colors

Sometimes, walls are painted a dark color because that was what the previous owners liked. However, dark colors can really make the house look depressing and sad. Brighten up the room by painting the walls bright or light colors. They do not have to be neon, but soft blues, pinks, greens, or yellows are excellent choices. If you are a bold person, you may be willing to do neon colors. However, keep it contained to one or two rooms.

In main rooms where visitors are likely to spend time in, have someone paint murals, or do it yourself. This can be a great project to do with friends. Think of something meaningful, whether it is a favorite city or a favorite quote, and figure out a way to make it into a mural. Having art that reminds you of people, places, and things that make you happy can make you feel better about your house.

Keep your house clean

Keep your house clean. Do a deep clean at least once a month and strive to dust at least once a week. Having a clean house helps you feel better about it. It is important for your house to be dust-free, especially if you have allergies. Also, if you have pets, it can be difficult to keep your house clean so you may have to clean more.

Organize and declutter your items. Use storage containers to optimize the space that you have available. Having a messy, cluttered house can take a toll on you mentally. When you start to organize, do a little bit each day and you will see progress soon. Make an effort to keep it organized so you know exactly where everything is.

Coming home to a house you do not like after a long day and work or school is a terrible feeling, but taking small steps to change how you feel about your home can make a huge difference.
