Ways to Make a Difference this Summer
While many students take the summer to work or relax, many more seek to make a difference in the world while they have time to. It can be difficult to feel like one person can make an impact, but every little bit helps. If everyone does something, real change will be seen around the world. As college students, it may be difficult to donate funds on a tight budget, but time is just as valuable. There are projects that need volunteers
1. Serve a meal at a local soup kitchen
Hunger and homelessness is a huge issue in the United States, but also within the city of Philadelphia and its surrounding area. It is evident everywhere, from those living on the streets to those constantly asking for money. Serving a meal in a homeless shelter or soup kitchen is a huge way to make a difference and to put a face to hunger and homelessness. You get a chance to mingle with those who struggle to find food and money for themselves and their families.
2. Participate in a fundraising walk
There are so many fundraising walks over the summer months within Philadelphia and in the surrounding area. These walks seek to raise awareness and money for causes such as diseases, animal welfare, and many more. Even if you cannot find one in-person that interests you, many causes have virtual walks and online fundraising platforms that allow users to sign up and raise money for causes without having to attend a walk physically.
3. Volunteer with Mighty Writers
Mighty Writers is a program for school-aged children who need help developing their writing skills. The program has facilities throughout the city of Philadelphia, including one right off of Temple’s campus, so there is a place near you if you stay in Philadelphia. They are always looking for volunteers to help children hone their writing skills and learn how to improve their skills. Over the summer, they are having a number of camps that volunteers can help with.
4. Build houses with Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is an organization that seeks to provide homes for those in need. They have a variety of project in a bunch of locations, so there are ways you can get involved, no matter where you live. The organization provides help for first-time volunteers who are looking to make a difference and they offer a variety of ways to get involved, so anyone with any skill can help out in one way or another, regardless of ability.
